Why We're Raising

The Detroit Association of Women's Clubs was organized in 1921 with eight clubs. It reached its peak membership in 1945 with 3,000 members. We are apart of the oldest historical African American organization to date: The National Association of Colored Women's Clubs, Inc. established in 1896 - headquartered in Washington, D.C. The clubhouse (located at 5461 Brush, Detroit, MI 48202) was purchased in 1941 and supported by a mortgage on the home of the President Dr. Rosa Gragg (pictured below). Club members honored her and themselves by completely paying for the club house in three years. In 1941, The Detroit Association of Women's Clubs was incorporated. The Detroit Association of Women's Clubs is a 501c3 non-profit organization that contributes to the needs of the community with various business partnerships, outreach programs for seniors, families, and youth through fundraising events, grants and charitable donations.
