Why We're Raising

The East Greenwich Animal Protection League (EGAPL) was formed in 1977 by founding members Dorothy Trehy, Marion Fry and Mary Clark. The Town of East Greenwich did not have a municipal pound and all stray cats were in danger of euthanasia. When these women started EGAPL as an all-volunteer rescue, the League was funded entirely by donations to save the unwanted cats and dogs picked up by East Greenwich Animal Control. Without a facility to house these pets, EGAPL began boarding animals in the Greenwich Bay Animal Hospital. Donations and adoption fees went towards the boarding and medical costs of the animals. Fundraisers, including rummage sales, bake sales, and events held by assisting Town organizations helped the League stay afloat. The Town of East Greenwich later added an annual contribution in return for EGAPL taking care of the stray population. With a welcome increase in spaying and neutering, the stray population of East Greenwich decreased over the years, and EGAPL began accommodating other Rhode Island animals in need whenever possible. Stray cats, sadly, were still common in Rhode Island, but fewer dogs found their way to the League. In 2011, EGAPL began working with high-kill shelters in the South that were badly in need of shelter for their many unwanted puppies and dogs. Today Our board of directors worked to save funds to purchase their own shelter building, and since our boarding agreement is temporary, we still strive towards that goal today. The EGAPL started a GoFundMe page in April of 2017 and we are now accepting donations and holding fundraisers solely for the purpose of renovating our NEW shelter building which we hope will be open very soon.
